"Solutions for the Gifted and Talented"
Key Destiny Educational Services Classes and Clubs
The purpose of each program is to provide children an opportunity to tackle in-depth topics normally not
available until later in their academic careers. While there are no restrictions on what ages can attend these
classes and clubs, the material will be presented at the level that will engage a gifted child working at the 2nd –
4th grade level.
Because we welcome children of all ages into our classes, information is presented in a number of different
ways and assignments can be completed in written format, picture formal, or verbally.
Human Anatomy
Our Human Anatomy course meets once a week for one hour. The course covers the skeletal system, the
muscular system, the nervous system (with emphasis on the brain), the circulatory system (with emphasis on
the heart), the respiratory system, the digestive system, and four of the senses (sight, hearing, tasting, and
smelling). We do not use standard textbooks in this course, but children will get a copy of the book “An
Illustrated Adventure in Human Anatomy, 2nd Edition” by Kate Sweeney. They will also be using hands on
models including skeletons and life sized models of the skull and brain, and enlarged models of the eye and
heart. Children attending this course should be comfortable around life like models as those used in the course
of medical school quality. Children will also do arts and crafts to help reinforce information learned as well as
fun songs and videos when appropriate. Reproduction will NOT be discussed in this course; however,
differences between girls and boys may come up from participants. We will always answer with medically
appropriate terms, and then move on with the scheduled topic at hand.
Cost: $160.00 for this eight week course
Astronomy
Our Astronomy course meets once a week for one hour each class. The course covers: what is astronomy, the
sun, the major plants, the minor planets, stars and galaxies, and the history of space travel for humans and
rockets. In this course we will discuss the various theories on how the earth began Creation, Intelligent Design,
the Big Bang, and the Death of a Star. We will cover this from the perspective that there are many theories on
how the earth began and each person chooses a theory as they direct their astronomy research. For the
purposes of this course, the theory chosen by each individual on the formation of the earth is not important as
we focus our attention on the galaxy as a whole and giving the children a good foundation on the sun, planets,
stars, and the use of tools of viewing the planet including telescopes, star finders, then on to human space flight
and rockets. Stomp rockets will be used for simulation, children will build their own working telescopes, and
arts and crafts will be used to reinforce learning. We will bring in fun songs and videos when appropriate.
Cost: $160
Children’s Literature (K-2)
This eight week course will cover several readily available children’s books. Children will read the books with
their parents’ during the week. In class, we will re-read the story, then have a discussion with the children
following Bloom’s Taxonomy of Education Objectives: Knowledge Comprehension, Application, Analysis,
Synthesis, and Evaluation. We will use the Royal Fireworks Press publication “Suppose the Wolf were an
Octopus as our guide through the course. To re-enforce what the children learn, we will do arts and crafts and
the children will keep journals. Journals will be customized to the fine motor skill development of the children,
so journal entries can be written by the children, pictures drawn by the children, or dictated by the children and
filled in by parents. The purpose of this encourage rich discussion and depth of learning with simple children’s
books as opposed to developing reading/writing skills, so children do not need to be proficient writers or
readers to gain from participating in the course. Any child that has the ability to focus and listen to second grade
level reading material will be a good fit for this course.
